Prague - A short guide to the best things to do, see and where to eat in the capital of Czech Republic!

Prague

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic in Central Europe. The city has attracted large number of tourists in the recent years due to its vibe and affordability. The currency is the Czech Crown (CZK).
My aim for this blog is to give the information in short and if you find the point interesting then you can search for more details online.

What to do?

Exchange money!
First and foremost, exchange your currency and have some CZK with you. Educate yourself with the current exchange rate, best place for currency exchange and how much you will need approximately.

Take a tour!
To truly appreciate a city and its growth, a little history lesson is very important! Even if the streets of Prague are alluring you to start exploring on your own, don't! Start with a guided walking tour :) Let the tour guide familiarize you with the city, its culture, history and then you can start exploring on your own.

Take a river cruise!
A cruise on the river gives a different perspective of the city and if you have the time, then why not?

What to see?

  • Visit the Old town square - This is the most obvious place and probably one of the first places that you will visit in your trip :)
The most beautiful Christmas tree in the market square

  • St. Nicholas' Church
  • Church of Our Lady before Týn

View of the Christmas market in the old town square with the 'Church of Our Lady before Týn' in the background

  • Check out the Astronomical clock (and the overrated hourly show) and the Old town hall
  • Climb the old town bridge tower for great views of the Vltava river and Charles bridge

  • Walk on the Charles bridge - It is a pedestrian stone bridge

Quite fascinating to see each horizontal piece move and the face form every few minutes

  • The narrowest street of Prague - For me this was more of a hype. The city knows how to attract tourists for sure! Notice the little pedestrian signal on top of the street 😄

  • Lennon wall - While this may come across as just another wall with graffiti, the history associated with it makes it quite special.
My husband modeling for me at the Lennon wall ;)

  • Petrin lookout tower with funicular
The Petrin tower looked magical in the evening. Due to fog we could not go up for the view.

  • Prague castle - It is a huge area with a castle, St. Vitus cathedral and various buildings. The guard change at the castle happens every hour.
St. Vitus Cathedral
  • Go up the Žižkov Television Tower - If you have extra time, here is something most tourist miss.

Eat, drink and be merry 🎉

Anonymous bar - It is quite a theatrical and unique cocktail bar.
Me trying to read the drinks menu with the special light.

Vegetarian Food 💚: Prague is a paradise for vegetarians. There are many vegetarian/vegan restaurants which serve tasty food.
Our dinner in Lehká hlava
We ate at these two places:
1. Lehká hlava
2. Beas vegetarian dhaba - Cheap Indian food (buffet, self service)

Mostly every pub has its own local fresh beer!

What to eat at the Christmas markets / street vendors:
  1. Try the famous dessert: Trdelnik
  2. Czech potato pancakes (bramboráky)
  3. Fried cheese, known locally as smazak, is a popular pub food with Czechs.
  4. Smazeny Zampiony (fried mushrooms)
  5. Langos - Fried dough with a layer of white or red sauce. Very tasty!!

Nightlife 💃- Prague is very famous for its nightlife and nightclubs. Probably the most famous nightclub is Karlovy Lazne. The main selling point for it is that its spread over 5 floors! We booked a pub crawl tour so we could cover the most interesting places in a single night with a fun crowd. 🍺🍹

We visited Prague in the last week of December 2016.
